If you are looking to take a family vacation for the first time in what feels like forever, you might be stumped on where exactly to go. As of writing, plane tickets are high because everyone is getting back into the groove. If you think you’re ready to get back into the groove when it comes to traveling, even if you are not crazy about politics, here are all the reasons why you should consider Washington D.C.

See the White House in Person

Even if you are not able to go on a tour, seeing it for yourself in person is pretty neat. It has been the home to every U.S. President except for George Washington. Could you imagine what it must be like living there?

“My first time ever visiting The White House and the feeling was indescribable. Although I was only able to take pictures from outside the fence, the sight was still beautiful. Apparently, you have to book months in advance for the indoor tour (noted). Maybe next time. Surprisingly there weren’t many people on the day I went (lucky me I guess). Would recommend it for anyone interested in visiting historical landmarks.” – Laura E., Brooklyn, New York

The Smithsonian Museums

There are a total of 17 Smithsonian museums in Washington D.C. and among some of the finest in all of the United States. Best of all, admission is completely free!

“We have been here multiple times but decided to take our daughters today for a “home field trip” I have one who loves animals and one who loves mummies. So it was a lot of walking and actually really packed for it to be in the middle of a school day. They had a lot of fun running through the museum. Of course we will return.” – Markesha E., Clinton, Maryland

The National Gallery of Art

Bring out your inner art lover at this stunning museum. With 141,000 pieces of art to view, you won’t help but be able to be inspired by them.

“This museum has a stunning collection- worth the visit. The collection isn’t deep but there are many gems.” – Curtis K., Raleigh, North Carolina

Lincoln’s Cottage

It’s a shame how many tourists don’t actually know about Abraham Lincoln’s Cottage. This is actually the site where the Emancipation Proclamation was developed! A multitude of special events are held year-round, and there is even a private venue you can rent for special events. You can check it out daily from 9:30 to 4:30.

“President Lincoln’s Cottage is a beautiful historic site, a must see! You can feel the soul of Lincoln in this home, it’s like going back in time and walking in the very private place where Mr.Lincoln often spent some of his most wonderful and difficult times in his life.” – Claudia P., Katy, Texas

See history upfront for yourself

Your kids may get more excited about their compulsory history classes once they have had some of these interactive experiences. It’s the closest thing you can get to going back in time.

Amazing gift shops

The souvenirs are ones that you definitely won’t want to miss. Oval Office photos, pens, and bobble heads? Yes, please! They can serve as a permanent reminder of all the fun you had with your family or as gifts for relatives who couldn’t make it.

What better place to spend the 4th of July?

Other than perhaps Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed, who could think of a better place to celebrate Independence Day?

Have you ever been to Washington D.C.? What was your favorite part of your trip?
